Text Excerpts

From "Why Is It Art? Three Mysteries of Artistic Intent:
Lascaux, Tamba and Disfarmer" an essay in Continental Drift

“My own view, the view which forms the core of this book, is that our idea of art cannot be separated from the perplexing question of original intent. Somehow, we must try to reconcile these two realms: the physical reality of the work and the intent of those who created it. In some cases, the passage of time alone has blurred this connection and thus increased our confusion. In other situations where we have more information, a persistent ambiguity may simply remain as a lingering penumbra over the work—elusive, deeply puzzling, steadily resisting our analytic gaze. Perhaps in the end, we can only intuit the connection between art and intent.”
